IC grad Bob McMillen wants to be 'players' coach' for Chicago Rush

Elmhurst, IL

Immaculate Conception graduate Bob McMillen has landed his dream job. After serving as an assistant since 2007 with the Chicago Rush, McMillen was named the team's head coach Tuesday.

"I'm very fortunate and honored that the organization believed I was the right guy," said McMillen, a Hillside native. "I haven't stopped smiling."

McMillen played for the Rush from 2003-07 and retired as the AFL's all-time leading rusher with 1,514 yards.  He won four AFL titles in his 12-year career, including one in '06 with the Rush.

McMillen said he's ready to take on the role as head coach which comes with plenty of added responsibilities.

"Being a coach you get blamed for the mistakes on the field," McMillen said. "You're responsible for putting a good product on the field."

Having won four titles as a player, McMillen has worked with many of the AFL's best coaches including previous Rush coach  Mike Hohensee who now coaches for the Philadelphia Soul.

"You take bits and pieces and try to absorb that and instill it in players," McMillen said. "Players have to trust you."

Having played the rigorous 18-game AFL schedule, McMillen said he will be concientious of making sure players have enough rest for the end of the season when the game matters most.

"I want to be a players' coach," McMillen said. "By the end of the season you want to make sure they are healthy for the playoffs."
