How To Achieve A Functional, Peaceful Room Arrangement

SPONSORED

Your home is your castle, and it should reflect your personality and your lifestyle in a way that provides comfort and inspiration to you, your family, and your guests.  One way to achieve a pleasant atmosphere in any room in your home is to understand how to arrange the items in it.

First decide how you want to use the room.  This will help you choose adequate and appropriate seating, furniture, and artwork and decor to polish off the look.

Measure the room, along with the hallways, stairs, and doors leading to the room to confirm your potential furniture purchases will fit.  Take your tape measure and a notebook when shopping for new pieces.

Furniture spacing and placement is key to the comfort and function of a room.  Choose pieces that are similar in scale (overall size) for a feeling of serenity.  Decide if you want symmetry in the room - adding items in pairs adds balance and feels restful.  Odd numbers or two items in different sizes add visual motion and excitement.

Choose a focal point in the room, such as a fireplace, large television, or architectural window, and arrange furniture and artwork around it.  Follow the “3-foot rule”, keeping room for natural traffic flow.  Place the largest pieces first (sofa, bed, or desk, depending on the room), and consider floating furniture if the space allows.  This feels cozy and inviting, with no “dead space” in the middle of the room.

Take advantage of natural light or a terrific view by placing a desk under a window.  A corner curio cabinet adds character while providing space to display photos or a favorite collection.
