Gender neutral bathrooms solve issue

The lack of understanding and compassion in people is so sad. I applaud District 99 on its insight and the decision to build gender neutral bathrooms in the schools. If your child was born male, but identifies as a female, and uses the women's room, we hear complaints. Vice versa for a child born as a female. Gender neutral bathrooms are quite simply a way to deal with the situation. Perhaps we could educate ourselves to try to understand what being a transsexual means, because it's a very real and genuine thing, not just some kids "trying to figure out who they are." Transsexuals have been around for a long time, sadly it's just now that society is finally becoming more aware and more accepting. If building these bathrooms could possibly make some kid's life a bit easier, then it certainly is not a waste of money.

Libraries still important

I agree that the Brookfield Public Library does not need a new building. But please don't denigrate the important services that libraries offer for children. And everything that kids need is not online, and there will always be a need for libraries. Please go to your local library and check out the free materials and services and socialization it offers. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Distraught over policy

I am shocked that all parents are not telling their schools that they do not want their children's bathrooms to be bisexual. I don't want to hear that my granddaughter had a man in her bathroom, and I am beyond distraught that schools would even consider such a thing. A bathroom marked "Anyone" should be sufficient for persons who want to be "different." As a Christian, I cannot believe the rapid downfall of any morals in our country, but the rights of Christians need to be represented also. Stop the decline of our country now as we are repeating the rise of Nazi Germany, when the churches were silent. Speak out.

Trump needs to share specifics

Now that Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee, I hope he will start telling us how he will deport 11 million illegal immigrants. Who will pay for that? How will he prevent Muslims from entering this country? Religion is not listed on a passport. Where will he find the money for the wall, because Mexico is not paying for that either. I'd like more facts now Donald, stop calling Hillary names and start putting some substance in your speeches. I'm wondering if you can do that.

Better record of success

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are responsible for the deaths in Benghazi to Ambassador Stevens and the other men, the other Americans, the heroes that we lost. There's no way that Hillary Clinton can be president. She does not deserve it. … She has absolutely no record of accomplishment. … We should support the Republican nominee, which is Donald Trump, and he'd be a lot better than Hillary Clinton. He has a record of success with his businesses, and you know what, I know people that know him, and he puts the right people in the right places, and I think I'll do that in our government, too.

Intent not required

An argument has been made that Hillary Clinton cannot be convicted of the felony of espionage if the emails she ordered transferred to her private server from State Department servers were hacked by foreign countries while the emails were on her server. This argument says that she had no intent to give the emails to a hacker. Actually, the espionage statute is one of the very few federal laws that do not require intent to prove a violation. This law is broken if negligence is proven in the handling of sensitive government communications that could and/or do fall into the hands of other governments.

Tie wages to cost of living

I would just like to voice my opinion on the minimum wage. I feel that the minimum wage should be tied to the cost of living. If it's good enough for the senior citizens, it's surely good enough for the minimum wage worker, and it needs to be taken out of the hands of the politicians and their whims.

Give superintendent a say

Why is District 99 so adamant about moving first semester final exams to before Christmas break? I seemed to recall, after the decision was made to set the 2016-17 school year in line with past school years, that the issue of starting school earlier should be left to the next superintendent. Now, the school board is about to vote on the 2017-18 calendar, before the end of the 2015-16 school year, nearly a month and a half before the new superintendent starts on the job. Shouldn't he have some say about the calendar?

Please restrain cat

This is a request to the owners of a male calico cat that is allowed to walk the streets in the vicinity of Selborne and Kent roads in Riverside. Your cat is spraying my storm door, threshold and door mat. As a result, the front of my home reeks of cat urine. I have cats of my own, and your un-neutered male is marking territory. Please keep your cat inside, where he will not get hit by a car, or catch any diseases. Better still, get him neutered. There are enough unwanted cats that get euthanized on a daily basis. Have a heart for animals and your neighbors.

Can't afford high taxes

I moved to Downers Grove in 1948 with my family when I was only 1 year old. … In 1967, my husband and I were married in Downers Grove, and have made our home here ever since. We have paid real estate taxes since 1968. Our children attended a Catholic grade school, where we paid tuition, plus school tax for the public schools. Our children are now married, and we are now retired and living on Social Security. This latest tax hike is so high that we can no longer afford to live in the home we love and the town we love. Our house is going up for sale, and we are sadly moving out of the state where half of our monthly income will not be going to real estate taxes. Goodbye Downers Grove. We will miss you, but not your ridiculously high taxes.

Double standard at ESPN

ESPN fired baseball commentator Curt Schilling when he said on the tweet that he believed men and boys with the proper male equipment should be only allowed in the men's room, and that women and girls without said equipment should only be allowed in the ladies room. A 5-year-old understands that, right? … Schilling was being too political, that's their excuse, but ESPN can run a story several times on the North Carolina bathroom law, no mistaking what side they were on. So that's just fine? That's what PC fascism is at work here. Stick to sports, ESPN.

Gun crime needs solution

Concerning the gun violence in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, I think it's time for Gov. Rauner and Mayor Emanuel and all the legislators to do something before it's too late, whether it's the National Guard or whatever it takes. They need to really reduce this crime and violence. It's getting worse day by day.

School funding bill a sham

This bill that's supposed to help children with school funding and taxes, it's such a sham. It's not going to help anybody. All it's going to do is help Chicago get their pension funds straightened out. Nothing's really mentioned about kids, but in every article the pensions are mentioned, and that's where it's going, for pensions, not for kids.

Myths about immigrants

As an attorney of 39 years, I would like to dispel some persistent myths. No. 1, the undocumented human being being referred to as an illegal alien is not eligible for federal and state payments, please name one you know. No. 2, there is absolutely no trend to allow the undocumented to vote; in fact there are severe penalties if a noncitizen votes. No. 3, Social Security deductions do not pay benefits to the undocumented. No. 4, the Donald has not only disparaged women, but has called the undocumented Mexicans rapists and drug dealers. This is not only untrue, but a terrible thing to say.

Improvements by park district

I'm reading your current edition about the improvements to the Glen Ellyn boathouse … It seems like over the last several years, while all the improvements the park district has done have been very desirable, and maybe even over-improvements, or more than we really need, yet, I wonder if they're in a position where they have to either spend their money or lose it, because it just seems to be a lot more than a normal park district would do year after year.

Steps to stop gun deaths

I'm a La Grange resident. I'd like Springfield to treat gun deaths like they do heroin deaths. Last year, Illinois lawmakers, including leader Jim Durkin, passed legislation help reduce heroin deaths, and I'd like them to come together to support state gun dealer licensing to reduce gun deaths. Many Chicago crime guns originated from specific suburban gun stores, and more dealer oversight in other states has reduced trafficked guns, and I'd like us to do the same here in Illinois.

COD board members should do jobs

What is up with Erin Birt and others avoiding board meetings and not attending? Resign if you are unhappy, or attend and relive the disaster created like the rest of us taxpayers. The casting of votes as "present" or "abstain" is also irresponsible. You are elected to govern the college. Live up to your responsibility, or leave the position.

Excess spending at COD

I guess COD is going to be a thorn in our sides forever. They are projecting a deficit of $11 million in the 2017 budget. Do you think if someone had been minding the checkbook, we might not be in the sad state now? Had they not given those exorbitant salaries, all their free drinks, meals, travel, the unchecked spending on the radio station, or should I say stealing, which was brought to the attention of COD by Elmhurst College when Elmhurst College discovered it at their institution, COD did nothing. Now salaries are going up 3 percent, and new positions totaling $1.4 million are requested and $2.2 million in new equipment. Probably new furniture furnishings for some honcho's office. Is there no end?

Executive actions on bathrooms

The executive branch of the federal government has made it the law that school students now have the power to determine their sex and pick out the bathroom they wish to visit. The Congress did not pass this as a law to be signed by the president, the president ordered specific appointees of his executive branch of government to decree this as law. Now, high school District 99 Board of Education has directed that gender-neutral bathrooms be constructed at South and North high schools in Downers Grove. … This new executive lawmaking also applies to locker rooms, and if that's not enough, for a citizen to even object to this situation has been defined by White House appointees as bigotry.

Why no senior center?

About the Downers Grove senior center, I'm surprised that they can't afford to have one. All the other suburbs have one, Westmont, Woodridge, Bolingbrook, Lisle, Naperville. They all have beautiful senior centers, but Downers doesn't even seem to have a senior room anymore. All the puzzles that the seniors enjoyed and all the books were dumped, oh, excuse me, donated, but anyway. It seems to be the seniors are being put on the side and not treated very well. It doesn't seem like the staff there is interested in the seniors as much as the toddlers. There's more toddler stuff going on than senior stuff.
