McHenry County libraries' summer reading programs abound

HUNTLEY – Summer reading programs across McHenry County offer prizes for participants who complete the reading requirements.

Huntley Area Public Library kicked off its program, Reading Colors Your Mind, on Wednesday. The program will last until Aug. 6, and participants among four categories – adults, teens, kids and infants – will track their progress to earn prizes. Because of the versatility, the program offers benefits to all participants.

“For most people it is an opportunity for an education over the summer,” said Leigh Ann Porsch, head of marketing and public relations for the library.

In addition to educating the public, the program also hopes to encourage students to continue reading during summer recess.

“For us, it’s always to maintain the reading levels that school districts have throughout the summer,” Porsch said.

Registration for the program is available online at www.huntleylibrary.org/content/reading-colors-your-world-summer-reading-2016.

The Woodstock Public Library offers its own summer reading program from June 6 to July 30. Participant categories include children through fifth-graders, sixth- through 12th-graders and adults. Adults can register online at il.evanced.info/woodstock/sr/homepage.asp, and youth participants may register in person at the library. Grand prizes for the adult category include Fitbits, earbuds, gift cards and USBs.

The Algonquin Public Area Library District’s summer reading program, Wild About Reading, launched June 1 and will conclude July 3.

Adults, high school students and children alike are invited to register. Prizes include books, $100 gift cards and Amazon Kindles.

Participants can register for the program in person.

Cary Area Public Library’s summer reading programs commenced June 1 and will continue until Aug. 14.

Programs exist for all ages, including infants through kindergartners in the Youth Read to Me program, first- through fifth-graders, teens and adults. Registration for each program is available at caryarealibrarysr.evanced.info/homepage.asp

Other summer reading programs also are offered at libraries in Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Harvard, Johnsburg, Marengo, McHenry and Richmond.
