FOX LAKE – Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit Deputy Jonathan Levin recently was honored for his life-saving actions during a Fox Lake crash.

Levin was driving home from a shift with the Marine Unit about 3:10 p.m. July 16 when he reached the scene of a serious crash on State Park Road south of Grass Lake Road in Fox Lake, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The crash involved a pickup truck and three motorcycles, police said. When Levin arrived, the pickup truck was on fire, and two motorcyclists were trapped underneath, police said.

Levin used his personal vehicle to block traffic and protect the victims when he arrived, and he pulled both motorcyclists away from the fire, police said. Levin administered first aid until paramedics arrived.

The driver of the pickup truck and one motorcyclist died, police said, but one of the trapped motorcyclists survived because of Levin’s quick actions.

“I am very proud of Marine Unit Deputy Levin, who showed true courageousness when faced with a very dangerous situation,” Sheriff Mark Curran said in a statement.

At the Fox Lake Village Board meeting Tuesday, Mayor Donny Schmit, the Village Board and Police Chief Russell Laine honored Levin for his actions.

“Deputy Levin’s actions were brave and heroic,” Undersheriff Ray Rose said in a statement. “They went above and beyond the call of duty, which resulted in a life being saved.”
