CRYSTAL LAKE – Some members of the Crystal Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12014 are thanking those who served with a handshake – and a free steak.
Texas Roadhouse, 835 Cog Circle, donated $3,960 to the VFW post in the form of $20 gift cards. Post members decided to distribute them to veterans they run across in public who are wearing clothing revealing that they served, Senior Vice Cmdr. Danny Malone said.
“When you meet a veteran at Walmart or Costco or Sam’s Club, you recognize them and hand them a card. It’s just recognition for a job well done, and you say, ‘Have a steak on us and the Texas Roadhouse, no strings attached,’ ” Malone said.
Malone, a retired Army first sergeant who served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, said the local Texas Roadhouse collects money during the year to dole out to various community groups, and that the VFW was one of them. Members of the post often eat there after conducting honor guards and color guards for public events or at military funerals, Malone said.
The post, which has 172 members, meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at Colonial Café, 5689 Route 14, Crystal Lake.
The entire Texas Roadhouse chain is known for offering a special meal free to active-duty military and veterans on Veterans Day.
