3-year-old Rockford boy killed in car crash near Gilberts

3 adults taken to hospitals

A 3-year-old Rockford boy was killed and three adults were injured in a three-car crash Thursday morning on Interstate 90 westbound at milepost 47 near Gilberts, Illinois State Police said.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that a red Ford Taurus – driven by a 26-year-old Rockford woman – which also was carrying the child and a 30-year-old Dixon man, was either stopped or slow rolling in the middle lane of traffic, according to the police.

A black Ford Fusion, driven by a 48-year-old Zionsville, Indiana, man rear-ended the Taurus. The third vehicle involved in the crash, a Silver Ford F150 pickup truck driven by a 65-year-old Friendship, Wisconsin, man tried to avoid the collision but struck the Fusion, police said.

The drivers of the Taurus and Fusion were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries not considered life-threatening. The child was transported to Centegra Hospital – Huntley, where he was pronounced dead. The second passenger of the Taurus – the Dixon man – was air-lifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and no names have been released.
