BOLINGBROOK – Police say a Lockport man's attempt to pass himself off as a retired officer failed with real cops Monday.
Charles J. Garcia, 58, of the 16400 block of South Dorchester Place, was arrested on two counts of impersonating a police officer.
Lt. Anthony Columbus said police were called at 9:49 a.m to the 1600 block of Manhattan Street in Bolingbrook to mediate a property dispute between Garcia's brother and his ex-wife.
"[Garcia] showed the officers a badge and claimed to be a retired Stone Park officer," Will County Assistant State's Attorney Chris Messina said.
According to Messina, Garcia was asked to stand aside and repeated his claim and showed his badge again to another officer. Columbus said Garcia's behavior prompted the officers to call Stone Park police.
"Officers were informed that Garcia was not a retired police officer and had never been a police officer but was a police commissioner over 20 years ago," Columbus said. "Upon closer inspection of the badge it was marked commissioner."
Garcia was taken to the Will County jail. Judge Art Smigielski on Tuesday ordered him held on $15,000 bond.
Garcia faces one to six years in prison if convicted of the charges. Messina said his only prior criminal conviction is a 1990 forgery in Cook County.
