DuPage County sees 3.5 to 4.5 inches of rain

Route 53 between Butterfield Road and Park Boulevard – near the Valley View subdivision in unincorporated DuPage County near Glen Ellyn – was closed part of the day May 1 because of flooding.

However, no houses in the Valley View area were flooded out, said Tony Charlton, director of DuPage County's stormwater management division.

Across DuPage County, between 3.5 and 4.5 inches of rain fell during the storm, Charlton said.

"The 4.5 inches of rain was kind of through the Carol Stream area, Winfield and Wheaton," he said.

Charlton said the county's flood control facilities helped to protect the county from flooding. Those facilities include the Elmhurst Quarry, Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir, Fawell Dam (Naperville), Spring Creek Reservoir (Bloomingdale) and Armstrong Park Reservoirs (Carol Stream).

"DuPage County itself does not flood like it used to," he said. "It's a success story."
