Lewis University receives $1.5 million gift to fund scholarships

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University received a $1.5 million donation to support scholarships that may make it possible for more than 100 students to attend the school over the next 10 years.

The donation was received May 4 from Give Something Back, an organization that provides scholarships and mentoring to low-income students in five states, according to a news release from Lewis University, a private Catholic school in Romeoville.

The money will go toward scholarship funds that – combined with state, federal and other funding from Lewis – could allow more than 100 students to attend Lewis over the coming decade, including 22 students next fall semester.

“Lewis University is incredibly proud and grateful to be part of the life-changing journey that Give Something Back offers to students,” President David Livingston said in a news release. “We look forward to continuing our partnership and relationship with current students who are at Lewis and the students who will be coming over the next decade.”

Robert Carr, founder of Give Something Back, presented the gift to the university. Carr grew up in a financially strapped household in Homer Township and, as a high school senior, he received a $250 scholarship from the Lockport Women’s Club.

That gift inspired Carr to establish Give Something Back to help working-class students.

“These are students who could use a break. I am very proud that this partnership with Lewis University is making it possible for so many deserving students to go to college and pursue career goals that would otherwise be out of their reach,” Carr said in a news release.

Give Something Back has donated to Lewis in the past. In 2013, the organization gave $1 million as part of its innovative partnership program that provides mentors and scholarships to help Pell Grant-eligible students go to college and graduate in four years without debt.
