WHEATON – A Wheaton man has been sentenced to 34 years in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting a girl.

Timothy Peltz, 52, who had served as a deacon at Living Hope Bible Church in Roselle, pleaded guilty Jan. 20 to four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. The crimes did not take place on church grounds.

On May 12, DuPage County Judge John Kinsella sentenced Peltz to 8.5 years on each count, with the counts to be served consecutively for a total of 34 years.

Prosecutors contend the sexual assaults occurred over 10 years and began when the victim was just 3.5 years old.

However, the charges to which Peltz pleaded guilty only covered a five-year period. He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the victim on multiple occasions from Jan. 1, 2008, through Aug. 4, 2013.

The assaults came to an end when the victim became physically able to resist and then told her mother what Peltz had done to her, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The girl’s mother immediately contacted the Wheaton Police Department, who in turn contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center, the release stated.

Peltz will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, and he also will be required to register as a sex offender for life. He has been held on a $1 million bond in the DuPage County Jail since being charged in August 2016.

“For more than five years, Mr. Peltz repeatedly sexually assaulted this very young girl to satisfy his perverse sexual obsessions,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “It wasn’t until his victim became older and physically stronger that she was able to put an end to his nauseating behavior. Thankfully, she went one step further than simply putting an end to Mr. Peltz’s assaults and told her mother what had happened to her. To do so took extraordinary strength and courage on her part and for that I commend her. I would also like to thank her mother for bringing this matter to our attention. Thanks to them, Mr. Peltz will spend what could amount to the rest of his life behind bars where he will be unable to prey upon little girls ever again."

This story has been updated from an earlier version to clarify the charges to which Peltz pleaded guilty.
