WHEATON – A Wheaton man who died after falling over a railing while leaving Wrigley Field following a Cubs game May 16 is being remembered as a caring husband, father and friend.
Richard E. Garrity, 42, was pronounced dead at 3:33 p.m. May 17 at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on May 18 said he died of head injuries and ruled his death accidental.
According to his Facebook page, Garrity lived in Wheaton with his wife, Emily McNulty Garrity. The couple had two young children.
He grew up in Glen Ellyn and had attended Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn and St. Francis High School in Wheaton, according to Facebook.
"Sorry to say my family lost one of the best men I have ever known," Dan Hamrin wrote on Garrity's Facebook page. "He passed very tragically 42 years young. We will always love you, and you will never be forgotten, Rick Garrity."
Those sentiments were echoed in the comment left by another friend, Erik Baylis.
"This week the world lost a great man, I lost a great friend and a family lost a special piece of them abruptly and out of nowhere," he wrote. "Rick Garrity, you were a great husband, an amazing father and a loyal friend, there is not a person who you came across in your life who didn't love you."
