CARY – A 52-year-old Cary man was charged with attempted murder, home invasion and residential burglary Monday in connection with a home invasion that occurred Sunday in unincorporated Cary, police said.

According to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, the Cary Police Department, Cary Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported domestic disturbance around 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning in the 7300 block of Swan Way. When emergency responders arrived, they found a victim outside the residence bleeding from the head and face.

Responders found Edward J. Zegers inside a bedroom in the home. Zegers also had injuries on his face. Investigators later learned that Zegers had forced his way into the residence and attacked the victim with a construction style nail gun, police said. Both the victim and Zegers were injured in the fight that ensued, according to the release.

The victim was transported to Good Shepherd hospital and later released. Zegers also required medical treatment and was then released into the McHenry County Sheriff's Office's custody.

Zegers' bond is set at $3,000,000. He is next due in court Friday morning.
