Multiple local police departments will hold their National Night Out events on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

The free events are open to the public and are part of community building campaigns aiming to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, and strengthen relationships between the police and communities.

“It is the mission of the Joliet Police Department to work with the community for a safe city, and the National Night Out Against Crime event is a valuable tool to help us accomplish that mission,” said Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton.

These annual events bring together residents, local officials, businesses with law enforcement. Residents are encouraged to turn on their porch lights as a symbol of solidarity against crime.

This year's event with the Joliet police department will feature and open house at its West substation, with police vehicles on display, officers presenting crime prevention tips and information and free child ID cards offered for children ages 2 through 12.
