New Glen Ellyn men’s grooming shop seeks to pamper customers

Oak & Steel opened in June in downtown Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN – Oak & Steel owners Dana Reese and Jori Moroni know that men like to look their best.

The two Glen Ellyn residents recently opened Oak & Steel, a men’s grooming shop at 480 N. Main St. in downtown Glen Ellyn. The store features services such as hair cutting, facial hair grooming, waxing, facials, massages and shoeshines and also has a fully stocked bar.

“We wanted to position ourselves somewhere between the guy that goes to the salon and the guy that goes to the old school barbershop,” Reese said. “We’re right in the middle. … We wanted a place where guys could be pampered with services.”

Reese also is general manager of Namaste Salon & Spa in Wheaton, where Moroni is a stylist. Namaste was located in the same building where Oak & Steel is now before moving to Wheaton.

“We grew bigger, so we moved to a much bigger space in Wheaton,” Reese said.

Oak & Steel features a fully stocked bar located above the salon. Customers who want to buy a drink must purchase one of the services the store has to offer.

“We offer the different services that your modern man might want in a place that he would go to be pampered,” Moroni said. “And to be able to sit and have a drink is part of that overall concept that we liked.”

Roger Chavez, the store manager and bartender, wants customers to feel comfortable when they come in.

“If there’s a 10-minute wait or if they are not even ready to get their hair cut right away, I bring them up here and offer them a cocktail or a beer,” Chavez said. “I have a pretty extensive knowledge in the liquor industry. I’ve been doing it for so long.”

That includes working at several establishments in Glen Ellyn, including the former Vitorios Ristorante in downtown Glen Ellyn. Customers can order craft beers, Scotch whiskies, whiskeys, bourbons and other drinks from the bar.

Oak & Steel uses Aveda products and is one of Aveda’s first men’s grooming shops. To make it convenient, customers can make appointments on the store’s app.

“It pulls up the full service menu and what hours are available that day and with who. And you can book your appointment right there,” Moroni said.

The store has seen a steady amount of business since opening in June, Reese said.

“The guys are really liking the pampering,” she said. “How we are different from other barbershops is number one, we use Aveda products that are sourced through organic materials. They’re good for you. And wellness is important to us.”

Relaxation is an important part of wellness, Reese said, which is why as part of the store’s signature men’s grooming cut, customers will receive a head, neck and shoulder massage and hot face towel.

Javier Cervantes has enjoyed his experiences at the shop after getting a couple of haircuts there.

“It’s a nice setup,” he said. “They have all kinds of services in a relaxing environment. It makes me feel good when I walk out.”

For regular customers, Oak & Steel offers an annual membership.

“A lot of times, our guys want to feel part of the club,” Reese said. “They can just be a VIP.”
