BERWYN – According to blues singer and pianist Marcia Ball, FitzGerald's is the best nightclub in the world.
That's why, she said, she cried when she heard Bill FitzGerald, the Berwyn club's owner, had decided to retire after 37 years in operation. The venue and adjacent bar and restaurant space is up for sale.
Ball was one of the first acts to ever play at the club at the corner of Roosevelt Road and East Avenue, and she remembers climbing on the roof of the building in 1981 to shoot promotional photos. She said she met FitzGerald at the now-closed Wise Fools Pub on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago.
He told her he was going to open up a venue and wanted to book her once he did.
