Valle: Giving back invokes true spirit of Christmas

I would like to share with you a quote from the 1981 Christmas message of Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States of America: "On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Christ with prayer, feasting, and great merriment. But, most of all, we experience it in our hearts. For, more than just a day, Christmas is a state of mind. It is found throughout the year whenever faith overcomes doubt, hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. It is present when men of any creed bring love and understanding to the hearts of their fellow man. The feeling is seen in the wondrous faces of children and in the hopeful eyes of the aged. It overflows the hearts of cheerful givers and their souls."

A wonderful way to draw us back to the true spirit of the Christmas season is giving.

For those of you who are looking for a way to help your fellow citizens who may not be as fortunate as yourselves, York Township offers marvelous opportunities to give.

Last year over the holidays, we helped 159 families with 412 children through our Christmas Adopt a Family and Toys for Tots programs. These families received gifts and toys all donated by local organizations, churches, schools, businesses and families.

If you would like to adopt a family for Christmas or donate toys for needy children, that is one way you can help. Another way to help is by supporting the York Township Food Pantry, which operates solely on private contributions and in-kind donations by individuals, corporations and organizations. Last year, our pantry served 1,847 families consisting of 5,251 men, women and children.

In addition to food products for our pantry, there is an ongoing need for cleaning supplies and paper products. Cash donations are always welcomed and much appreciated. If you would like to contribute, you can drop off donations anytime during business hours or call 630-620-2400 for more information.

On behalf of York Township employees, volunteers and the folks who benefit from York Township programs and services, I want to thank all of you for your generous support during the holiday season and throughout the year. Wishing you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.
