A Naperville man has been charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 9 stabbing death of his mother at her home near Downers Grove, according to a DuPage County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Kevin D. James, 23, appeared Jan. 11 before Judge Liam Brennan and his bail was set at $3 million after he was charged with fatally stabbing his mother, Patricia James, 51. James is being held in the DuPage County Jail, the release stated.
At about 1:38 p.m. Jan. 9, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a family member at a residence in the 2100 block of 63rd Street. The caller stated her brother had stabbed their mother inside the residence, and she had fled the home, according to the release.
While in his mother’s home, James allegedly stabbed his mother multiple times with a kitchen knife, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the house and located James in the doorway of the residence, covered in blood, the release stated.
Deputies ordered him out of the residence, and he was taken into custody, according to the Sheriff's Office release.
Deputies entered the home where they found James’s mother unresponsive on the floor of the front room with multiple stab wounds, officials said. She was taken by the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where she was later pronounced dead, the release stated.
James was transported to the Sheriff’s Office, where he has been held since the incident.
Undersheriff Frank Bibbiano praised all of those involved in the investigation.
“I would like to commend the deputies who arrived on scene and captured the suspect before he could flee the area,” Bibbiano said in a statement. “It was reported that James was attempting to gain access to vehicles traveling on 63rd Street and those deputies undoubtedly prevented further violence from occurring. The investigators handled themselves with the utmost in professionalism and compassion during this difficult investigation. Their dedication and persistence are second to none.”
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin also commended the sheriff's deputies who responded to the scene.
“Last Tuesday, Patricia James was stabbed to death, allegedly by her own son, Kevin,” Berlin said in a statement. “To her surviving family and friends, I offer my sincere condolences on their loss. I would like to commend the DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputies who quickly responded to the scene of this tragedy and quickly apprehended the suspect before he could escape."
James is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Jan. 26.
