Students win awards in Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra competition

ELMHURST – Two York Community High School students won awards in the Dr. Robert Stanger Young Artists Audition for 2018, held Feb. 17 at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road in Elmhurst.

The Elmhurst Symphony Association conducted the auditions, which were sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst and the former auxiliary of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra though its Eunice B. Sidener Scholarship, according to an association news release.

York seniors Matt Dardick and Nathan Brown won second and fourth place, respectively. Dardick, who studies alto saxophone with teacher Roger Birkeland, performed "Ballade, Movement 1" by Henri Tomasi, the release stated. Brown, who studies marimba with teacher Tom Leddy, performed "Concerto for Marimba andStrings, Movement 1" by Emmanuel Sejourne, according to the release.

Violinist Margaret O'Malley, a junior from Glen Ellyn who is homeschooled, won first place with her performance of "Concerto No. 3, Op. 6, Movement 1" by Camille Saint-Saëns, the release stated. O'Malley studies under the direction of teacher Gerardo Ribeiro.

William Lyon, a cellist and a junior at Wheaton Academy in West Chicago, won third place with "Cello Concerto in A minor, Movement 3" by Camille Saint-Saëns, according to the release. Lyon studies under the direction of teachers Julieann Tehan and Tanya Carey.

O’Malley will perform with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra at a subscription concert during its 2018-19 season, and other winners will perform for Kiwanis and other local groups in the next few months, the release stated.
