"This man was extremely generous to the community, to other business owners and to friends and family alike," Glen Ellyn Village President Diane McGinley said, in honoring Lewek during the Feb. 26 Glen Ellyn Village Board meeting. "Rest in peace, Al, we'll miss you."
Lewek was heavily involved in the community, including being past president of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn. He was a past president of the Rotary Club and a member of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society Board of Directors.
"He's been the chamber photographer for years," chamber Executive Director Dawn Smith said.
There will be a moment of silence at the Glen Ellyn Community Awards Breakfast on March 3 for Lewek and other community volunteers who have died in the past year, including Jim Bourke, Jim Rasins and Bob Chambers. The event is hosted by the chamber and the Village Fair Committee.
"He was taking pictures of the Community Awards even last year," Smith said. "It seemed like he really loved Glen Ellyn, and he would do anything for the betterment of the town."
