Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin defended his place on the general election ballot March 20, beating primary challenger Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub.

Durkin won by a large margin in DuPage County, claiming 65.1 percent of the vote, or 2,507 ballots cast in his favor, according to unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Commission. Straub received 1,344 votes, or 34.9 percent.

In Cook County, the margin was wider, with Durkin garnering 68.8 percent of the vote, or 2,624 votes, to Straub's 31.2 percent, or 1,190 votes, according to preliminary numbers provided by the Cook County Clerk's Office.

Will County voters followed a similar pattern, with about 69.6 percent of voters, or 1,606, voting for Durkin, and about 30.4 percent, or 701, voting for Straub, according to unofficial poll numbers from the Will County Clerk's Office.

Durkin will face Tom Chlystek in the November general election for Illinois' 82nd House District. Chlystek was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
