Students across the country participated in the National School Walkout, which was held on the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine.
Students chanted and carried posters as they headed into Fishel Park, where several students addressed the crowd.
Sean Casten, Democratic candidate in the 6th Congressional District, also spoke to the students and encouraged them to continue their advocacy by contacting elected officials and voting.
“If you’re not registered [to vote], get registered,” Casten said. “Tell your friends to get registered.”
League of Women Voters representatives attended the rally to register voters.
Casten added the conventional wisdom in politics is to avoid talking about gun control.
“The politically smart people say don’t talk about gun control,” said Casten, who added pressure from students will change that mindset.
