WHEATON – Police investigating a social media warning of a potential shooting May 11 at Wheaton North High School have found the threat not to be credible.

On May 10, the Wheaton Police Department was informed information was appearing on social media warning of a potential shooting at Wheaton North, according to a news release from the Police Department.

Detectives immediately were assigned to investigate the information, and they identified an 18-year-old Wheaton man as the originator of the alleged threat, the release stated.

Detectives interviewed the individual and his guardian and determined he did not pose a threat, according to the release. Detectives confirmed through a search the individual did not have any weapons, and there was no evidence of plans to engage in violence, the release stated.

The Police Department worked in conjunction with Community Unit School District 200 to ensure it would be safe to continue with the planned school day, according to the release.
