For Mulvihill’s sheet, this was only the Red Devils’ second win in eight tries against New Trier (20-4), which had won 11-9 May 17. The Red Devils trailed 2-1 Saturday but then scored seven unanswered goals.
The Red Devils’ last full-game victory over Loyola was for the 2007 state championship, the program’s other title. The Red Devils have since lost to Loyola in the 2015 and 2011 finals and finished third six times and fourth once. Last year’s third-place team lost to New Trier 7-5 in the semifinals.
“We were always so close. For this year, to finally make it over that hump beat both of the teams we’ve been trying to beat for years is just mind-blowing,” senior goalie Kelsie Chisholm said. “We just came on the field and we wanted it so we took it. All of the pieces we’ve been working so hard on just came together. We crushed it.”
Seniors Kristiana Strtak (five goals), Johnson (two assists) and senior Napier (one goal), junior Sydney Collignon (one goal, three assists) and sophomores Jenna Collignon (one goal, one assist), Jessica Joy (four goals, one assist), Madeline Pisani (three assists) and Alaina Hamood (one goal, one assist), helped Hinsdale Central lead 23-9 in shots.
The Red Devils dominated draw controls 13-4, and two big Chisholm saves kept them ahead before Joy’s goal for a 4-2 halftime advantage. New Trier went scoreless for a 38:21 stretch.
