ELMHURST – Two Texas men have been charged with breaking into a locker June 25 at L.A. Fitness, 620 N. York St., Elmhurst, and stealing keys they then allegedly used to break into a car in the parking lot and steal credit cards.
Azeez A. Aweda, 31, and Tasiu A. Jimoh, 31, both from Houston, each have been charged with burglary, a Class 2 felony, and identity theft, a Class 3 felony, and Jimoh also has been charged with possession of burglary tools, a Class 4 felony, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.
Elmhurst police officers responded to a call June 25 at L.A. Fitness regarding a report of offenders breaking into a locker. The victim reported his locker had been broken into and his car keys were stolen, the release stated. The victim also reported his car was burglarized and three credit cards had been stolen.
It is alleged that at about 1:30 p.m., Aweda and Jimoh entered the health club and, once inside, broke into the victim’s locker, stealing his car keys, according to the release. The pair then allegedly used the keys to burglarize the victim’s car. It is alleged the suspects used the stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards from Mariano’s in Elmhurst in the amount of $3,045, the release stated.
An Elmhurst Police Department investigation led to Aweda and Jimoh. The two were arrested without incident June 28 at an area hotel, where they allegedly were found to be in possession of $47,125 worth of gift cards, according to the release. Jimoh also allegedly was found to be in possession of bolt cutters capable of breaking into a locked locker.
Aweda and Jimoh appeared in DuPage County Court the morning of June 30, where bond was set at $100,000 for each, with 10 percent to apply, the release stated.
Aweda’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 23, and Jimoh’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 16. Both men are scheduled to be arraigned at their next court appearance, according to the release.
Jimoh has posted the necessary 10 percent, or $10,000, and has been released from custody, the release stated. Aweda remains in custody at the DuPage County Jail.
