ELMHURST – Ivan Frick, the 11th president of Elmhurst College, died Aug. 25 at the age of 90 at Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, Pa.
Frick served the college with his wife, Ruth, from 1971 to 1994, and led it through financial challenges that struck much of higher education around the time of his early years at the college, according to an Elmhurst College news release.
“Ivan Frick was such a conscientious steward for the College,” current President Troy VanAken said in the release. “I especially respect his dedication to being a good fiduciary – his long record of balanced budgets, how he built the endowment, his attention to fundraising, and that he kept debt levels low so that future generations wouldn’t be burdened – his approach has set a strong example for me."
Frick's tenure also saw advances in the college's academic program, including the establishment of the Center for Business and Economics, Department of Computer Science and Information Systems and increased offerings for adult learners, as well as the construction of R.A. Faganel Hall and Daniels Hall and the renovation of other buildings, the release stated.
Upon the Fricks’ retirement, the student union was renamed the Frick Center in honor of the couple's leadership, according to the release.
Frick, a native of New Providence, Pa., graduated in 1949 from Findlay College, now named University of Findlay, in Findlay, Ohio, where he served as president from 1964 to 1971, the release stated. Frick earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1959 and held theological degrees from Lancaster Theological Seminary and the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College, according to the release.
The Fricks were married for more than 64 years, the release stated. Ruth died in 2015.
Frick is survived by two sons, David and Daniel (Tamara Goeglein); his daughter, Susan (Ronald Searl); a sister; two brothers and five granddaughters, according to the release.
