Students 'elect' J.B. Pritzker in League of Women Voters mock elections

Students from 14 DuPage County high schools participated in mock midterm elections the week of Sept. 17, overall "electing" gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker and other Democratic candidates.

The League of Women Voters, DuPage County Election Commission and Governmental Business Systems partnered with the high schools to provide the hands-on learning experience, which involved students using authentic voting machines, ballots and vote tabulators used in polling places, according to a news release from the Leagues of Women Voters of Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Naperville and Roselle/Bloomingdale.

Pritzker won the mock election at all but one of the schools, Wheaton North High School, according to league results. The other schools included all four Glenbard Township High School District 87 schools, Addison Trail High School, West Chicago Community High School, both Lake Park High School campuses, Wheaton Warrenville South High School, Naperville North High School, Metea Valley High School, Waubonsie Valley High School and York Community High School.

Social studies teachers worked closely with league representatives to maximize student participation, the release stated. Students experienced the entire voting process – from registering to vote to casting ballots – and voted for candidates for the 5th, 6th, 8th and 11th Congressional districts, along with the offices of governor, attorney general, secretary of state, controller and treasurer, according to the release.

Other candidates who won overall included Kwame Raoul, Jesse White, Susana Mendoza, Mike Frerichs, Mike Quigley, Sean Casten, Raja Krishnamoorthi and Bill Foster, results showed.

The Election Commission delivered actual voting equipment to the 14 schools, including voting booths, a ballot box and an optical scanner, and student voters received “I Voted" stickers after completing the ballot and feeding it into the scanner, the release stated.
