WHY HE WAS SELECTED:
Wheaton Warrenville South senior Matt Scherrman had a huge part in three wins. Scherrman was 4-for-4 with two doubles and was the winning pitcher against Schaumburg, had a double in an 11-9 comeback win over Benet and went 2-for-4 at plate and threw two shutout innings for the save against Stevenson.
Scherrman talked about the week, the season and more with Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge. Here is an edited version of the transcript:
Welge: What's your thoughts on the start to the season?
Scherrman: We can't be disappointed at all. We are 6-3, we've got a lot of people playing well. It's been offense, defense and pitching.
Welge: Last week was pretty good, right?
Scherrman: We beat Stevenson, we beat Benet in kind of a crazy game. We were up 6-1, kind of got on them early, they put up eight runs in the fifth, we got down three, scored five runs in the sixth and then shut them down in the seventh. It's just been everyone doing their jobs.
Welge: You have a lot of seniors on this team. Does that give you confidence that you guys can have a turnaround season?
Scherrman: Having so many people back, we know that it's our turn to get the job done. Everybody knows this is our last year playing together. Four of us have been up for three years. We're all clicking together.
Welge: Are you playing in college?
Scherrman: Yes, but I'm not totally sure where yet. It's down to two Division III schools, and we're waiting on a Division I school.
Welge: What's your favorite sports team?
Welge: Who's your favorite pro athlete?
Scherrman: Javier Baez.
