U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, released a statement saying he and his wife were OK after attending a food festival in California where a gunman opened fire and killed three people.
Lipinski and his wife were on vacation in northern California when they attended the Gilroy Garlic Festival Sunday night. He said the shooter was not far from them as they heard loud "pops," which "seemed to get closer as we ran."
"Judy and I are okay," Lipinski said in the statement. "Thank God. We pray for those killed and injured and for their families."
The congressman thanked law enforcement.
"The tragedy would have been far worse if not for their quick action," he said. "Also, the festival staff did a great job in the aftermath."
Lipinski also took the opportunity to weigh in on the issue of gun violence in the U.S.
"The level of gun violence in our nation is sickening," he said. "It is an issue we must deal with not only legislatively but spiritually and socially."
Among the three dead was a 6-year-old boy. Twelve were injured.
