WESTMONT – People are gearing up for the “once a year block party” on Quincy Street in Westmont, as Stephen Fleck calls the annual Wine Tasting event.
Three years ago, Fleck and his business partners wanted to bring a wine bar and restaurant to Westmont, but needed a way to introduce the idea to the town, he said. Through a relationship with the village and some hard work, the annual Westmont Wine Tasting was born, hosted by Dolce Restaurant and Wine Bar.
The main event will run from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 14 outside Dolce Restaurant and Wine Bar, 15 W. Quincy St., with the VIP event also happening during that time.
“Since we’re not on the main road, we can’t participate in many of the events, but the village really works with us,” Fleck said. “This is the one time of year we shut down our street for an event and it’s really exciting.”
This year’s event is sponsored by Westmont Special Events and Suburban Life Media. Fleck said through relationships with the sponsors, the event has gained publicity.
Kirk Askew, who owns Uncle Booker’s Bar-B-Kew, will be at this year’s event, serving attendees barbecue as they socialize. There also will be a local coffee roaster providing samples to attendees, Fleck said.
Another addition to the third annual event is a cocktail tasting, which Fleck said he is excited to offer attendees. He said all of the new elements help expand the reach of the event.
“Someone who likes wine a lot but doesn’t know a lot about it will learn a lot,” Fleck said.
The live music this year is “more than just an acoustic solo act,” Fleck said. A trio headed by Robert Hynes will play popular covers from artists such as Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac during the festivities, Fleck said.
In previous years the event drew more than 100 people, and Fleck said he expects nearly 200 attendees this year, pulling in residents and those living outside of Westmont.
