Lipinski challenger drops out, endorses Newman for Congressional seat

A primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski said that he’s dropping out of the race and endorsing Marie Newman.

Abe Matthew, a Chicago attorney, made the announcement in a news release Monday that he was ending his campaign.

Matthew was running for the Democratic nomination to represent the 3rd Illinois Congressional District, a seat Lipinski was first elected to in 2004.

“We entered this race because there is a hunger in our nation for leadership on the issues of pressing concern for our people,” Matthew said.

Matthew went on to endorse Newman, a La Grange businesswoman and progressive challenger to Lipinski. Newman narrowly lost the Democratic nomination to Lipinski in 2018 and is challenging him again in 2020.

“I am endorsing Marie Newman because I trust her to fight for the mothers and fathers who are struggling to get by,” Matthew said.

He said he trusts Newman to fight on issues such as reducing gun violence and achieving universal health care.

Rush Darwish, a Chicago small-business owner, is also challenging Lipinski.

Both Newman and Darwish have shown a strong ability to fundraise relative to Lipinski in the past quarter. Still, Matthew unequivocally backed Newman.

“Marie will be our advocate in Congress,” he said.

The Illinois primary election is March 17.
