Outdoor sports will be here before you know it and the Glen Ellyn Park District has a variety of offerings so that all youth can get involved and remain active this spring.
Girls softball is run with the assistance of the Glen Ellyn Girls Softball Association. Girls learn softball skills while teamwork is promoted. The girls also learn the rules and have a lot of fun. Teams are formed in mid-March and practices will begin in April. Programs are available from pre-K through eighth grade.
Similarly, there’s the baseball program, which begins with T-Ball 1 (ages 4-5) through Pony for seventh and eighth graders. The Glen Ellyn Park District teams up with the Glen Ellyn Youth Baseball Association to provide baseball.
One of the sports on the rise is rugby and Glen Ellyn Youth Rugby is available for third graders to high school seniors. The emphasis is on individual and team skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and rugby etiquette and conditioning. Weather permitting, practices will begin in mid-March.
Other upcoming spring offerings include boys lacrosse and soccer.
Those feeling withdrawal with the NFL season recently ending might want to think ahead and sign up for football or cheerleading.
The Glen Ellyn Park District has a flag football program for grades 1-4 that begins in August and runs through mid-October. It also has tackle football for ages 7-14 with the Bill George Youth Football League. In both programs, participants learn the fundamentals of the game, teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in a supervised, organized and safe environment.
Flag football cheerleading is geared toward beginners and teaches the fundamentals of football cheerleading and prepares them for the Golden Eagles Tackle Football Cheerleading program, which is a two-fold program for girls and boys that provides sideline cheerleading, halftime routine opportunities and more.
