Extracurricular Activities Complement Schoolwork, Enrich Students

SPONSORED

The benefits of extracurricular activities can’t be overstated.  Research shows that students who participate in after-school programs achieve higher academic performance and improved social and time management skills, along with higher confidence and self-esteem.

At St. Joseph School in Downers Grove, students have a variety of extracurricular activities to choose from.  “Children blossom in many ways, and it’s our aim to expose students to programs that stimulate their interests and special abilities,” said SJS Principal Rita Stasi.

For those interested in music, students in grades 4 through 8 can participate in the St. Joseph School Band and Choir.  A Choir Chime program is available to 5th and 6th graders, and piano and violin lessons are available after school for 1st through 8th graders.

On the academic side, students can compete in Science Fairs, Scholastic Bowls, and Spelling and Geography Bees.  Mathletes engage in mathematics competitions, and the Student Council offers an opportunity to build leadership skills.  “The enrichment programs offered by SJS are a great addition to the curriculum,” said SJS parent Daniela Sokolowski.  “My children have had opportunities to explore different areas that interest them in a fun, hands-on learning environment.”

The “no cut” sports program at SJS offers 5th through 8th graders opportunities to participate in football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, and track and field.  Younger students can play soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball through the Indian Boundary YMCA and the Downers Grove Park District.  Sports help students build friendships and develop teamwork and leadership skills.

Additional interesting and fun opportunities include Book Club, Art Club, Readers Theater, Geography Club, Third Grade Science Lab, Bricks4Kidz, Engineering for Kids and other STEM programs, along with an Extended Care Program before and after school.  “We came to SJS over nine years ago,” said SJS parent Colleen White.  “We’ve seen a long tradition of great extracurricular activities offered to the kids.”  For more information, please contact:
