Most people will need Long-Term Care … but not me! Sound familiar?

About half of Americans above the age of 40 believe almost everyone is likely to require long-term care services as they age. However, it appears everyone is pointing to someone else

According to the results of a poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, only 25 percent think they will need long-term care for themselves.

“Too many of us are in denial about aging and the costs and burdens that come with longevity,” said Matt McCann, a nationally known expert on Long-Term Care insurance and extended care planning.

McCann says most people understand longevity will impact our health and independence, but far too many can come up with many excuses why they don’t need to plan.

“People think, erroneously, that Long-Term Care Insurance is expensive. The fact is, for most people, LTC policies are very affordable,” said McCann. “Some people think health insurance or Medicare will pay for all the extended care they will need. They are mistaken. Too many people think they are too healthy and won’t need extended care. Wrong again. Being healthy just means you will live longer and aging alone is a risk for long-term care.”

McCann encourages his clients to plan for reality. As we age, we will need help with normal activities of daily living or supervision due to memory loss. Advances in medical science allow for greater longevity, and the downside of living a long life is long-term care.

“People require long-term care due to illness, accidents or the impact of aging. Long-Term Care Insurance is easy, affordable and rate stable income and asset protection. These policies help family be family and reduce the tremendous burdens that are placed on family members,” McCann explained.
