A Joliet man was arrested on an aggravated assault charge after he pointed a gun at a driver during a verbal altercation in Romeoville, according to police.

Kenneth Stennett, 61, of the 1200 block of West Marion Street, got into a verbal altercation with a driver and pointed a gun at the driver, Romeoville Deputy Police Chief Brant Hromadka said.

About 1:10 p.m. May 15, officers responded to the area of Independence Boulevard and Taylor Road after receiving a report of two drivers who were arguing, Hromadka said.

Hromadka said the police received a call about the incident from the alleged victim, who saw Stennett was driving recklessly and got into a verbal altercation with him.

Hromadka said Stennett pointed a gun at the driver while at a stoplight and the driver continued to follow him while providing updates to a police dispatcher.

“The offender denied pointing a gun or making threats but was legally in possession of a firearm,” Hromadka said. The alleged victim and a passenger provided statements to police
officers.

On Thursday, Stennett was formally charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, court records show. He appeared in court with Chicago attorney Mark Bergel.

Stennett pleaded not guilty to the aggravated assault charge, court records show.

A judge ordered prosecutors to give discovery records to Stennett’s attorney by June 18. Stennett’s next pretrial date is Aug. 6.
